Pre Tour
Arrive at Sault Ste Marie, check into your hotel or bed & breakfast. You may wish to arrange with your accommodation for a box lunch for the train trip up to our resort. Most have a package which includes a box lunch. If you have time, the bush plane museum is excellent, the lock tours are worth doing and Sault Ste Marie has a great boardwalk along the waterfront on the Ste Mary's River. You can pick up your train tickets by presenting your voucher up until 6:00 pm the night before your departure.
North Bound Day
7:00 to 7:45 am - If you have not yet collected your tickets, present your voucher for your train tickets and give the station agent your overnight baggage which they will put onto the passenger train. Your carry-on should contain your camera, binoculars, rain jacket, extra sweater, insect repellent, reading material and box lunch.
8:00 am - Algoma Central Railway's Agawa Canyon tour train departs Sault Ste Marie and wanders through the hardwood forests of the southern Algoma region.
11:00 am - Train arrives at Agawa Canyon, 118 miles north of Sault Ste Marie. Agawa Canyon is the transition zone between the hardwood and boreal forests. It also has beautiful waterfalls, trails and scenic lookouts. You can eat your box lunch at one of the many picnic tables or on one of the train coaches.
1:00 pm - The Algoma Central Railway passenger train arrives in Agawa Canyon. Board the passenger train for the trip further north through the boreal forests of northern Algoma.
4:30 pm - Arrive at Lake Wabatongushi in the Chapleau Wildlife Preserve, 206 miles north of Sault Ste Marie. You are now at the top of the Canadian Shield, the oldest mountain range in the world. This is also the top of the divide between Lake Superior and Hudson Bay. Al Errington will be meeting you with the pontoon boat for the 15 minute ride over to our island.
5:00 pm - Settle into your suite, walk the island and get ready for dinner.
6:00 pm - Dinner in the lodge dining room. We have a set menu each night where the main entré is either beef, pork or chicken. If you have special dietary needs or are vegetarian please let us know before starting your vacation so we can adjust your meal preparation accordingly.
7:00 pm - Pontoon Boat Tour for wildlife viewing and nature appreciation. Tour is approximately 1.5-2.5 hours duration, depending on the hours of daylight.
10:30 - Lodge closes for the evening. Depending on weather conditions we should have great star gazing, and the Northern Lights may be out depending on solar activity.
South Bound Day
7:30 am - Lodge is open. Enjoy a coffee or shop for souvenirs. This is also a good time to settle the balance of your vacation account.
8:00 am - Breakfast in the Lodge dining room.
9:00 am - Pontoon Boat Tour for wildlife viewing and nature appreciation. Tour is approximately 1 hour duration.
10:30 am - Al Errington will be bringing you back on the 15 minute pontoon boat ride to the railway.
11:00 am - Board the Algoma Central Railway passenger train. We provide a box lunch and beverage for your train trip back to Sault Ste Marie. There will be no stop or train transfer at Agawa Canyon.
6:10 pm - Arrive back at the Sault Ste Marie train depot. Because it is evening you may wish to stay another night in Sault Ste Marie. You may wish to explore more of the Algoma Area by doing some excursions north or east of Sault Ste Marie via the trans Canada highway. If you have not visited the Bush Plane Museum yet or taken the lock tours, you may wish to make some time for them too.
