We had something really wonderful happen for one of our guests a number of summers ago. A new guest, Bill Zadorski is a professional photographer from Grayling Michigan. He visited us with long time guest Russ Stevens for a fishing trip. He expected some good fishing and maybe some decent wildlife photos. What he did not expect was a night sky literally ablaze with northern lights.
We usually get beautiful Northern Lights a number of times per summer but this time was quite exceptional. Bill drew on all of his past photography experience plus some astronomy and navigation experience from years back in the armed forces. It took him until after 3 AM to shoot one roll of film using shutter speeds that were measured in minutes instead of fractions of seconds. After that he just had to wait until he got home to see what he had.
When he returned to our resort with his wife later that summer he brought the "photos" with him. He had blown them up to sizes ranging from 11"x14" to 20"x24". The beautiful photos were totally un-retouched. The colours and hews he has captured, not to mention the eerie patterns and shapes, were awesome.
Bill felt that he had been given a once in a lifetime opportunity that night. A few other photographers have captured spectacular Northern Lights on film but he had never seen any with this character and the mirror like reflections in the water.
Bill and his wife have now registered the prints of these photos as a limited edition under the name Northern Lites of Wabatongushi ©. We recommend them to anyone who would like to display a unique work of art for their home or office to arouse memories of the beauty and serenity of the North.
