Chapleau Crown Game Preserve

  • World's largest wildlife preserve
  • No hunting or trapping allowed since 1925 (fishing is allowed)
  • Situated 100 km (60 miles) east of top of Lake Superior in Algoma Country
  • Latitude 47°50' to 49°5' Longitude 82°55' to 84°30'
  • It straddles the height of land between Hudson Bay and Lake Superior
  • Covers an area of over 7,200 square km (3,000 square miles)
  • It is illegal to possess any type of firearm or trap inside the preserve boundaries (This even includes slingshots)
  • Abundant populations of wildlife such as Moose, Black Bear, Timberwolves, Bald Eagles, Loons, Osprey, Merlin, Pine Marten, Mink and Otter
  • Access along it's 80 km (50 mile) western boundary is provided by the Algoma Central Railway

Wabatongushi Lake

  • Wabatongushi means "White Sand" in Ojibway
  • Second largest lake inside the Chapleau Wildlife Preserve
  • Latitude 48°26' Longitude 84°13'
  • At mile 206 (km 331) on the famous Algoma Central Railway
  • Accessible by train from Sault Ste. Marie, Hawk junction or Hearst
  • Accessible by float Plane from Hawk junction (20 minutes)
  • Total area of over 3,000 ha (10,000 acres)
  • Excellent fishing for Walleye, Northern Pike, jumbo Perch and Whitefish
  • Over 70 uninhabited islands
  • Fed by 28 rivers and creeks
  • Thousands of acres of wet lands adjacent to the lake
  • Abundant Loon population
  • Bald Eagle and Osprey nests around the lake
  • Sightings of Moose and Black Bear Common

 

Errington's Wilderness Island Resort

  • Resort owned and operated by the Errington family since 1975
  • Resort is on a 3 ha (10 acre) island at the north end of Wabatongushi Lake
  • 2.5 km (1.5 miles) from Algoma Central Railway by boat
  • 5 km (3 mile) nature trail on adjacent island
  • All new log buildings since 1980 which project a rustic atmosphere while providing a high degree of comfort
  • Main Lodge with dining room, licensed lounge, pool table/games room and a large stone fireplace
  • 6 suites adjacent to the lodge with separate bedroom and living room, 4 pc, bath, small refrigerator and coffee center
  • 8 housekeeping cabins with 3 pc bath, carpet, living room, airtight fireplaces
  • 18' (5.3 meter) cedar strip boats with padded swivel seats, electric start 9.9 hp Johnson 4-stroke motors and depth/fish finder included in all plans, except 1 night Agawa Canyon Tour, for each 2 adults
  • Electric trolling motors available
  • Guides for fishing and/or wildlife viewing available
