Male Walleyes mature at approximately 3 years of age, generally
grow to approximately 20”/51cm and have a life expectancy is 15-20 years. Female Walleyes mature at approximately 5 years, grow faster than
the males after age 4 and can live considerably longer. |
Notes
|
Male Northern Pike mature at approximately 4-5 years, generally
grow to approximately 28”/71cm
and have a life expectancy of 15-25 years. Female Northern Pike mature at approximately 5-6 years, grow
considerably faster than males and live considerably longer. |

|
The larger that female Walleye and Northern Pike become, the
better spawners they are. Although egg production per pound decreases
slightly as female Walleye and Northern Pike age, egg size, health and
viability increase significantly with age. It is not known if female Walleye
and Northern Pike ever do reach a size and age where they become over-mature
and unable to spawn. -Larger Walleye and Northern Pike become so partially because of
age, and partially because they are genetically larger. If larger fish are
released they continue to pass their larger genes into the gene pool. -For both Walleye and Northern Pike the best eating are 5-9 year
old fish because of fillet size, quality of the meat and superior taste.
Walleye 14”-18” and Northern Pike 24”-30” are best eating, and larger fish
are best spawners. |
