Except for genetic anomalies
male Walleye do not grow this large |
Male Walleyes mature at about
3 years of age, generally reach a maximum size of approximately
20"/52 cm and maximum life expectancy of 15-20 years.
Female Walleyes mature at approximately 5 years of age, grow
significantly faster than the males after age 4 and can live
considerably longer. Egg production per pound decreases slightly
as female walleyes age however egg size and viability increses
significantly with age.
The weights of Walleyes can vary, especially in females, depending
partially on how much they have eaten or, especially, on how
much their eggs have developed. The closer to early spring spawning
the larger their eggs are. |

Except for genetic anomalies male
Northern Pike do not grow this large |
Male Northern Pike mature
at about 4-5 years of age, generally reach a maximum size of
approximately 28"/71 cm and maximum life expectancy of 15-25
years.
Female Northern Pike mature at approximately 5-6 years of age,
grow significantly faster than the males, and can live considerably
longer. Egg production per pound decreases slightly as female
Northern Pike age however egg size and viability increses significantly
with age.
The weights of northern Pike can vary, especially in females,
depending partially on how much they have eaten or, especially,
on how much their eggs have developed. The closer to early spring
spawning the larger their eggs are. |
Larger fish become so partially through
age and partially because they are genetically larger. If larger
fish are released they can pass their "larger" genes
into the gene pool.
