50 Catch and Release Fishing Awards in 2001

Dan Colligan released the largest Walleye last year. A 28" beauty who has probably produced millions of young through the years and, thanks to Dan, will probably be producing millions of young for years to come. This is the second time Dan has released the largest Walleye of the year and his good friend Russ Meyer is has also won twice over the many years they have been visiting us. Dan and Russ love to fish and spend many hours on the water. They catch and release 100's of fish each visit. They do an exceptional job of caring for our fishery while thoroughly enjoying it. We are happy to reward Dan again with Gentle Fisherman award trophy and another 10% discount on his next vacation at our resort.

The largest Northern Pike Caught and Released in 2001 were twins. Justin Curran caught and released two 37" Northern Pike 1 day apart. We hope his luck continues into his upcoming marriage and schooling. Justin had his wonderful fiance, Cianha, with him on his visit to our resort and was just a few days away from starting medical school. (We don't mean he has to release his wife after he catches her) We are awarding Justin with the Titus trophy for the largest Northern Pike released in 2001 and two 10% discounts on his next vacation to our resort, one for each of the two 37" Northern Pike he released. Maybe a honeymoon trip eh Justin.

Danny Martin also has 2 catch and releases to his credit beside the 17" Walleye below. According to our catch and Release log book it for a 225 lb sucker. Danny is seriously considering the merits of barbless hooks to make releases from his hand quicker and less painfull.

We decided to expand our Catch and Release Awards last year to a total of 50 Catch and Release discounts of 10% on each of our winners next vacation at our resort. Each of the 6 largest Northern Pike and 6 Largest Walleyes released in 2001 earns a Catch and Release Discount. We also draw 2 names randomly from each week in our catch and release log book and the remainder are randomly drawn from all of the names in our Catch and Release Log Book. We would like to thank all of our guests for releasing the 100's of larger Northern Pike and Walleye registered in our Catch and Release log book and the other 100's of Walleye and Northern Pike released which were not registered. Large fish are almost exclusively females which means they can produce a lot more fish. With Walleye especially, it is now generally accepted that the larger the female is, the more successful spawner it is. They do not necessarily produce as many eggs per pound but their eggs are larger and healthier with a much higher hatch success. They also tend to be genetically larger which increases the growth rate of the general population..
