What's New in the Wilderness!
As of May 2006 I now have 2-way satelite
internet at the resort which allows me to do more with the website
during the summer, and send out more email news. Connecting to
the internet over our radio phone all these years has been a
major challenge and time consuming aggravation which Doris and
I are very happy to put behind us. Please come to this page often
to see the changes at Errington's Wilderness Island Resort. -

Hello everyone
Stargazing season is starting here again on Lake Wabatongushi.
Generally in June and July we don't do as much star gazing and
looking for the northern lights because our days are so long
up here we have to stay up too late. It is starting to get dark
around 9:30-10:00 pm now. Last night we had some northern lights
although the moon was full and washed them out a bit. This weekend
we are going to stay up each clear night because the Perseids
meteor showers are one of the most spectacular night events of
the year. During the Perseids meteor you can see 50-100 meteors
per hour. The Perseids Meteor shower is a yearly event from late
July to mid August and the peak this year is the night of Friday
August 12th. The moon will be just past full which will make
it a little more difficult to see the fainter meteorites, but
we will be staying up to see the show anyway. If you are not
here but you have a clear sky to look at, the Perseids meteor
shower should be towards the northeast.
Have fun

Hello everyone,
Everything has been going great here.
I wanted to let everyone
know some good news. The Government of Canada has lowered the
Federal Sales Tax (GST-Goods and Services Tax) by 1% as of July
1. This means almost everything in Canada is now 1% cheaper because
GST is on everything in Canada except groceries. This is part
of a phase out of Canada's Goods and Services Tax.
Fishing has been really great this year. Our biggest Northern
Pike released is a 40 incher by Larry Novak assisted by his brother
Jerry, and the largest Walleye released is a 33 incher by Rocky
Puska assited by Alan Beamer.
We have a lot of baby loons around this year that hatched over
the past few weeks. They are growing fast.
Well take care everyone and have a great summer.

2006 is a Walleye and Wildlife
Babies Year
Besides the beautiful weather this year
we have really been enjoying more than usual Baby Bears, Moose
and Loons and we have had more than usual large Walleyes released
caught and released this year.
The last few weeks we have had a significant
number of large Walleyes released including a 33inch Walleye,
a 30 inch walleye, and a number of 27 to 29 inch walleyes. It
has been really great and we thank the conservation efforts of
our guests in ensuring these large Walleyes continue to spawn
and enhance Lake Wabatongushi's great fishing. So far Rocky Puska
has released the largest Walleye of 2006 with the 33 inch walleye
they released in late June. Rocky says he could not have done
it withouth the able assistance of Alan Beamer on the net. Jean
Vickers released the beautiful 29 inch walleye she is holding
in the picture at right.
We have had more baby moose around this year than
we have seen in quite a number of years. We feel there are at
least 10 calf moose in and around the north end of Lake Wabatongushi
where our resort is. The picture of the Cow moose with calf at
right was taken by Jerry Urbaniak a few days ago. The calves
are already geting quite a bit bigger considering they were born
in late May to early June. We also have a few female Blakc Bears
with cubs like the ones photographed by Pay Moylan above.
This summer has been warm so the swimming raft we
built last year has been used quite a bit. It makes agret place
for a refreshing break on a warm afternoon.
Well we hope you all are having a great
summer.

Hello Everyone,
Well we have been open a week now and although
it was a little cold last Sunday it was a beautiful week. The
Walleyes spawned early and are biting well. We had some great
shore lunches for our guests this week. Fresh Walleye is so good.
Although this is not peak Northern Pike or Perch time, there
are a good number of Northern Pike coming in and some large perch
are being caught with the Walleyes. Usually the Walleyes are
still coming out of the rivers from spawning this time of year
but they have already moved out to the shoals and drop offs.
So far there are two mother bears at Bear
Point where we leave the fish carcasses and food waste for them.
One Bear has two ubs and the other has 3 cubs. The cubs are almost
the size of basketballs right now and are still nursing. We have
seen a number of moose around but no calves yet.
The Walleye and Northern Pike hatched a week or so
earlier than usual this year. We are seeing large clouds of Walleye
fry (newly hatched Walleye) swimming under the surface eating
zooplankton. They are already about 1/2"/1cm long. Walleyes
lay lots of eggs because about 90% of Walleye fry that hatch
are eaten in the first year by larger fish, including older Walleyes
that survived their first year. Devin and Morgan netted about
100 to raise in their aquarium. The Walleye fry are pictured
at left and you can see a larger picture ofthem if you click
on the picture. Walleye fry that survive should grow to approximately
2.5"/5 cm by this fall.
Devin netted a Northern Pike fry for their aquarium
again this year. It was about 5/8"/1.5cm when he caught
it about 1-1/2 weeks ago. It ate a lot of zooplankton, small
insects and freshwater shrimp and is now 1-1/2"/3cm long.
Northern PPike grow fast and it should be 6"-10"/15-25cm
long by September. He is starting to eat some of the Walleye
fry and should be eating small minnows in the next couple of
weeks.
We have seen Bald Eagles and Loons nesting
already and they should be hatchin in late June to early July.
Well we hope all of you are doing well
and hope to see you sometime this summer.
Take sare of yourselves

Happy Easter Everyone
It has been a beautiful spring up here
with nice warm weather. We hope you all have been able to enjoy
it too. We hope this weather continues into another beautiful
warm summer like we had last year.
A couple of notes for everyone:
Ann Egan won the Titus trophy by releasing
the largest Northern Pike last year at 40-1/2 inches. James Pett's
Sr won the Gentle Fisherman Award for releasing the largest Walleye
at 29 inches. We have all of our last years Catch and Release
winners posted in our website at http://www.WildernessIsland.com/fishing/fishing2005.html.
The Ontario government has changed the
7-day fishing license to an 8-day fishing license so people visiting
on a week long vacation can fish both the day they arrive and
the day they depart. Other than that there are no fishing regulation
changes this year.
Our children, Devin and Morgan, are now
maintaining their own page in our website. They decided to take
things into their own hands in regard to attracting more children
and families to our resort. You can check out their page at http://www.WildernessIsland.com/KidClub/index.html.
We are also working on something new for
all you people who have been taking photographs over the years,
our own photo contest. We will have prizes in 4-6 categories
as well as random draw prizes for people who sign up as judges.
We are still putting the finishing touches on the photo contest
website but hope to have it ready in the next few weeks. The
first year it will be open for all past guest of our resort from
any year. So get out all those old photos and start going through
them. Any photo you enter will have to be uploaded from a computer
so some of you may have get your photos scanned at a local photo
store. As soon as the website is ready I will let everyone know
the details.
Have a Great Weekend
